Steph's Altered Book

My altered book began as an old Art History book. Through deconstruction I found the pages that spoke to me and began there. These pages are a mix of image transfers, carved out sections, collages fibers, paint, tape and wire. The process of giving new life to this old and unused book gave me a new creative life that has spread to other areas of my art and teaching. I look forward to sharing this with my students.

The Crow and the Pitcher

You'll have to excuse the six picture post- I wanted to show the entire story of my book. Unfortunately, the third and last image have been switched so don't get too confused!! I absolutely loved this project. I have been teaching altered books in my classroom, and it was really cool to learn techniques that I had never seen before. I'm so excited to pass some of these ideas to my students!!

We Came In Peace

I let the subject of the book direct the images and materials places inside. I used shape and line found with in charts and phenomena in space as well. This gave the book a graphic look. This is the first time I have done anything like this. I'm hooked!

Shannon's Altered Book: Final Favorites

I loved some and hated some, but walking away helps with perspective and them it all comes together.

Altered Book

My Altered Book is called "Culture Clash" and deals with old art standards vs. modern street art. Classic vs. new.

Altered book images - Rick Rack

This was very difficult for me. I had never even heard of altered books AND I loved my 1973 sewing book! But it did speak to me of my adolescence, the zigzag of emotions about boys and my body at that time. I'd like to try this again and stretch my own boundaries even further.

Cherish's Altered Book

The altered book project was an amazing way to mine inspiration and creative ideas from objects that we encounter everyday. While altering my book, I discovered many processes and compositions that I would like to use in the future. Perhaps more importantly, I learned which processes and compositions didn't seem to work. This book also offered a wonderful opportunity to communicate with my peers and instructor and apply their suggestions to the book-altering process.

Shannon's Altered Book: A Process

This is the beginning of my Altered Book. I have been taking pictures as each page progresses. Enjoying trying new ideas and processes.
